Past Project Success

Second Annual Steiner Cares Back-to-School Clothing Drive (August 2008)

We are very happy to announce that the Second Annual Steiner Cares Back-to-School Clothing Drive was a huge success! Over 3,300 clothing items were donated and distributed to the Leander Clothes Closet, the Austin Childrens Shelter, the Salvation Armys Downtown Shelter for the homeless, and to the Austin Chapter for Dress for Success. Even more amazing than the large quantity of clothing was the high quality of the donations. The residents of Steiner Ranch truly came through for many, many kiddos throughout the Austin area.
A special appreciation to:
Gene Arant/Keller Williams Realty
WAGABAG
The Mobile Loaves & Fishes crew from Lake Hills Church
Lakeside Pizza and Grill

Without the volunteers, this project would not have been possible. Dozens of folks worked very diligently throughout the afternoons triple-digit heat to sort the clothing as the donations came in. These volunteers included the following folks: Julie Sabuda Nancy LaBarbiera Greg & Lynne Stamps Jason Collins David Guthrie Tom Henry Jennifer Mitchell George & Liliane Vaught Chris & Jenny Mashburn Jimmy Smith & Family

Also, the following Mother/Daughter teams from several area Brownie and Girl Scout troops: Tina and Sarah - Brownie Troop # 403 Tamara and Saige - Brownie Troop # 403 Kristine - Brownie Troop # 1771 Debbie and Brianna -- Girl Scout Troop #1762

Apologies to the folks that we have surely missed.

A special recognition goes out to the Steiner-area children who worked side-by-side with the adult volunteers all afternoon Thanks again to everyone for helping many, many less-fortunate children throughout the Austin area to start the school year with some awesome clothes to wear.

Habitat for Humanity (February 2008)

The HFH had a total of 13 SC volunteers that split into 2 teams; One team tackled landscaping for two houses and the other team put up a backyard fence at a 3rd house. Joe Lorson was our Project Leader and passes his thank you to Jason Collins, Todd Hindman, Craig Buchner, Greg & Lynne Stamps, JC Stamps, TJ & Norma Harais, Bill Whitman, Aaron Chester, Jason Pfeifer, Mike Parmer. "It was an honor working with all of you for such a worthy cause and also getting to know you all better."

Dress for Success (March 2008)

We received over 140 ladies' suits and over 250 additional clothing items (shoes, dresses, slacks, blouses, purses, etc). Many of the items donated still had tags on them...the community really responded. Items that cannot be used by Dress for Success will go to the Arc of the Capital Area. It is a 501 (c)(3) organization, which provides services to adults and children with developmental disabilities. (http://www.arcofthecapitalarea.org/) Many thanks to Tom Henry who helped organize and communicate this great activity and he passes on his appreciation for everyone involved for their support in making this a successful campaign.

Steiner Cares Adopt-a-Family-for-Christmas Benefit (December 2007)

The inaugural Steiner Cares Adopt-a-Family-for-Christmas Benefit was a huge success. Thanks to all of the volunteers for helping to make this event far exceed its forecasted goals:

With $6,130 in gross revenues, after expenses, $4,500 in net proceeds were raised to help make this a wonderful Christmas for many, many folks.

Special thanks to Alayne Hodges, Kriste Dinnes, Tina & Jon Kanak, Lynne & Greg Stamps, Lisa Collins, Crystal Smith, Brad & Brenda Weaver, Jill Stearns, Susan Russell, Bryan Hardy, Monica Little, and all of the “kiddos” who worked hard to make the event a success. In addition, special appreciation to Jimmy LaFave, his band, and to the following establishments for their contributions to this effort:

·         Casa Chapala Mexican Restaurant (3010 W. Anderson Lane)

Gene Arant - Realtor
      Iguana Grill
      Lakeside Pizza and Grill
      Rosie’s Tamale House
The Celebration of Love Organization (

      Wag-a-Bag

In addition to helping the Harmon family, who recently lost their home to a fire, these funds were used to provide gifts to Austin’s working poor. These are the folks that work very long hours for very low wages doing the jobs that most don’t want to do. Thus, without help, they often must choose to either celebrate Christmas – or pay bills. With your help, this year, they got to do both.
Steiner Cares Fall Food Drive (October 2007)

The Steiner Cares Fall Food Drive was a huge success!  Steiner residents donated over 1100 food items!  Steiner Cares volunteers in Las Brisas, the Headlands, and Summer Vista picked up, sorted, and prepared these items for pick-up by the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.  From there, the food items were distributed to Austin charities and ministries that provide them to our fellow Austinites who desperately need them.  Thanks to everyone who served and donated items in connection with this project.

We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Alyane Hodges who did a masterful job of coordinating this great service project.  Alayne assembled teams, energized them for action, coordinated our efforts with the Capital Area Food Bank, and allowed her own home to be used as the base of operations.  Please thank Alayne for her great work as the Steiner Cares Fall Food Drive Coordinator next time you see her.

We also need to thank Lakeside Pizza & Grill for donating pizzas for all of the volunteers.

Steiner Cares Back-to-School Clothing Drive (August 2007) In August of 2007, Steiner Cares volunteers gathered, sorted, and delivered approximately 1,800 clothing items to the Salvation Army's Central Texas Homeless Shelter (the largest shelter in Central Texas) and low-income families in South Austin in partnership with Iglesias Verbo. Over 1,000 of the clothing items were for children, which helped kids return to school dressed for success. Steiner Ranch residents responded to the call for support in a major way.  They gave clothes, worked all day sorting, and helped deliver the donated items to people in need.  Thanks for helping make this project a major success.  Additionally, we thank Gene Arant for providing access to a community service truck that made delivery of the donated items possible.
